About Frank Newport
Dr. Frank Newport is a Gallup Senior Scientist and one of America’s leading scholars and analysts of American public opinion. He served for nearly three decades as Editor in Chief of the Gallup Poll and is currently a visiting scholar at the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences at Stanford University. Newport served as president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the nation’s largest and oldest professional association for survey researchers and pollsters. He was a special consultant to the Commission on Presidential Debates in each presidential election between 1992-2020.
Dr. Newport has published widely in professional, scholarly and consumer publications, and has contributed thousands of research articles, blogs, videos, podcasts, editorials, and research analyses on Gallup.com, to which he continues to write the Polling Matters blog. Newport was founder and co-host of the podcast Objective Religion, a podcast focused on religion and society during the 2020 election year. He is co-author of Words That Matter: How the News and Social Media Shaped the 2016 Presidential Campaign (2020), co-author of Winning the White House 2008: The Gallup Poll, Public Opinion and the Presidency (2009), author of God Is Alive and Well: The Future of Religion in America (2012), author of Polling Matters— Why Leaders Must Listen to the Wisdom of the People (2004), co-author of The Evangelical Voter, and co-editor of annual volumes of The Gallup Poll: Public Opinion.
Newport graduated from Baylor University, from which he received the Distinguished Alumni Award, and holds an M.A. and Ph.D.in sociology from the University of Michigan. Newport’s interest in inequality and inequity was kindled in his graduate school days at Michigan, and his Ph.D. dissertation was a direct test of several premises relating to equity and equity theory. He has taught and written about social stratification and for decades has studied Americans’ opinions and thoughts on the topic. Frank lives and works near Princeton, New Jersey.
A New Format and Structure
Rethinking Inequity is designed to convey information to the reader and to stimulate thinking about new approaches to inequity in American society. Nonfiction “idea” books tend to present key points filled out by expanded (and often bloviated) narrative. Rethinking Inequity is an attempt to change things up, conveying information and perspective to the reader as directly as possible. The book uses an innovative format that cuts the bloviation and filler out of the main narrative while guiding the reader through the book’s key points. Examples and extended discussions are in section set off by boxes and horizontal bands. This is unusual and in some ways controversial for traditionalists, but the format is designed to optimize the reader’s reading enjoyment and ability to acquire new and enlightened understanding.
